JoAnne P. Ashforth

May 10, 1954 ~ February 1, 2023
JoAnne P. Ashforth, 68, of East Bacon St., passed away February 1, 2023 at her home after battling colon cancer. She was born in Liberty, NY, a daughter of the late Robert B. and Jennie Sherwood Nolan. JoAnne was born with Cystic Fibrosis. Although she was not expected to live into her teens, she defied the odds and graduated from Liberty Central School and SUNY Cortland. At Cortland, she met the love of her life Fred Ashforth. They were married in 1976. JoAnne was an elementary teacher at Waterville Central School for 18 years. In July 1993, after waiting nearly two years, she received a double-lung transplant in Pittsburgh. She was grateful for a family who agreed to donate the lungs of their son who died in an accident. Their generosity, the medical team in at UPMC in Pittsburgh and her fighting spirit gave her a second chance at life. She was also grateful to her dear friend and physician Dr. Francis Chabot. She was able to see her children grow and give her 6 grandchildren. She was an inspiration to many. She and Fred had a passion for ballroom dancing. They had many dance friends and taught dance for several years. https://www.burgessandtedescofuneralhomes.com/obituaries/joanne-ashforth

Firebombing of Dresden

“On the evening of February 13, 1945, a series of Allied firebombing raids begins against the German city of Dresden, reducing the “Florence of the Elbe” to rubble and flames, and killing roughly 25,000 people. Despite the horrendous scale of destruction, it arguably accomplished little strategically, since the Germans were already on the verge of surrender.”
