LBJ sends federal troops to Alabama to protect a civil rights march

“On March 20, 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson notifies Alabama’s Governor George Wallace that he will use federal authority to call up the Alabama National Guard in order to supervise a planned civil rights march from Selma to Montgomery. Intimidation and discrimination had earlier prevented Selma’s Black population—over half the city—from registering and voting. On Sunday, March 7, 1965, a group of 600 demonstrators marched on the capital city of Montgomery to protest this disenfranchisement and the earlier killing of a Black man, Jimmie Lee Jackson, by a state trooper.”

AROUND TOWN:

Congratulations to this past Thursday’s Newsies Jr. cast and crew!
3rd Annual Green Up Waterville happening on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22nd this year! Share the post, invite friends to the page, and show up on 4/22!
💪🏼 Let’s work together to keep our sidewalks, ditches and roadways something to be proud about instead of something to shake our head in disbelief about. We’ve had about 50 people show up to help each year, and overflowed two dumpsters last year with 125 bags of garbage… let’s make it 75 people, 3 dumpsters and 200 bags this year! Routes will cover Waterville, Sangerfield, Deansboro and Oriskany Falls this year. Big goals and more details to follow! 💚🌎🗑️♻️🌳
